![]() The metaverse will continue to spill billions of dollars more in red ink on the income statement, but after Zuckerberg's pep talk, investors are looking at the company through rose-colored lenses. That's a sensible plan, and it doesn't overshadow Meta's high-margin digital advertising business. The company plans to grow overall profits steadily while investing in Reality Labs. He seems to have convinced investors that isn't true, and that's partly why the stock has soared. Shares fell roughly 75% in the year after the company changed its name to Meta, and part of the reason for that seemed to be investor fear that Zuckerberg would risk the entire business on his metaverse experiment. The Meta CEO may also be responding to the plunge in the stock. The struggles of the metaverse are also noticeable compared to the level of attention that ChatGPT and generative artificial intelligence have gotten recently, which seems like the kind of transformative technology that actually has practical applications. Non-fungible tokens (NFTs), a companion market, have plunged in value, and the idea that people want to spend time in virtual worlds has yet to gain salience, while public interest in the metaverse also seems to have evaporated after Zuckerberg initially made it a buzzword. The metaverse project has fallen flat thus far, not just at Meta but elsewhere as well. However, there are a number of reasons why Zuckerberg's focus seems to have returned to the core business. In fact, it released Quest Pro, its latest headset, at the end of the last year. Meta isn't giving up on the metaverse by any means. The Meta chief discussed the company's recent work in the metaverse on the earnings call but it seemed to take a back seat to Meta's other projects as he summed up the company's priorities by saying, "Alright, so those are the areas we're focused on: AI, including our discovery engine, ads, business messaging, and increasingly generative AI, and the future platforms for the metaverse." Beyond this, our management theme for 2023 is the 'Year of Efficiency' and we're focused on becoming a stronger and more nimble organization." ![]() Zuckerberg's opening statement in the earnings release also omitted any mention of Reality Labs, saying: "The progress we're making on our AI discovery engine and Reels are major drivers of this. In the report, the company noted that nearly all of its capital expenditures, which primarily go to its data centers, are for its family of apps, rather than Reality Labs. On the earnings call the company talked up its investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and cost-cutting and efficiency initiatives such as a more cost-efficient data center architecture. That's exactly what he appears to be doing here. However, like a seasoned politician, Zuckerberg seems to have learned that the best way to deal with bad news is to shift attention. In the fourth quarter, Reality Labs lost $4.3 billion, capping off a year in which it lost $13.7 billion. That move also revealed Reality Labs to be a smoldering money pit, and it's only gotten worse since then. ![]() Around that time, the company restructured its financial reporting to separate Reality Labs, the division that produces Oculus VR headsets and is focused on the metaverse, from its family of apps segment.

![]() These leaks became possible after Twitter CEO Elon Musk introduced increased video length and file size limits as a perk for Twitter Blue Subscribers, now allowing monthly members to post videos as long as two hours and as large as 8 GB. Like Lord and Miller, Tatum also praised the crossover script, describing it as "by and away the best third sequel to any franchise that I've ever read, in my entire life."įresh off their Jump Street success at the time, Lord and Miller dove headfirst into the world of animation with hits like The LEGO Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and The Mitchells vs. And then once everybody is kinda like, not willing to come off their fee, you end up having a producer fee that is essentially, maybe more than the actual budget on the movie." "They're giant producers, y'know, on that. He went into more detail, citing Parkes, Steven Spielberg, Neil Moritz (the main producers on both franchises) as the main obstacle to making the film a reality. Tatum sounded off on the crossover during a recent chat with IGN, stating that he still thinks it could work. “If Sony would ever really, like, I think do the hard work and figure out the producer problems that are inherent with that film, I think we can still do it," he said. “Right now, I don't know why, they're just not motivated to do it. "It was a good intention, and everyone was smart, but when you really step back and look at what's at the heart of either of those two series of movies, they're not very compatible." And, actually, that doesn't mesh," added MacDonald's fellow MiB producer, Walter Parkes. Jump Street is taking very recognizable genre situations and going over the top with them. " Men in Black comes down to taking extraordinary situations and playing them in a comedic deadpan way. "It was just a crazy impulse that was worth exploring." ![]() "It was one of those things, because usually we all tire of everything trying to be made into a franchise, but to us it was actually such a crazy bold idea that's also the reason we said yes," longtime Men in Black producer Laurie MacDonald told CinemaBlend in 2019. Since the latter failed to kickstart the franchise back up after the original trilogy of films led by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, Sony/Columbia may decide to brush the cobwebs off Lord and Miller's script. The crossover with Jump Street, which actually debuted an official logo at CinemaCon in 2016, was pronounced dead five months prior to the release of International. Despite an attempt to reboot the series with a pair of hot Marvel stars - Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson - the film was a critical and box office disappointment. The Men in Black franchise eventually returned to the big screen in 2019's Men in Black: International. "It was very funny, it was very funny - trying to manage these two franchises and not drive them both into the ground seemed like a real challenge." Miller went on to say that the movie would have spun out of the end credits of 22 Jump Street, which poked fun at the idea of sequel fatigue. “Basically, the idea was that Jonah and Channing …a thing happened while they were doing their medical school adventure that got them embroiled into the world of Men in Black and they ended up teaming up to stop an alien takeover type of thing," he added. ![]() With the included Kids+ subscription, your child can access age-appropriate books, movies, TV shows, educational apps, and games. Between the case and the warranty, you should be able to rest easy knowing the Fire 7 Kids should last at least a couple of years. But you don't need to worry about that potential scenario too much: an included two-year warranty ensures you can get a replacement if the tablet breaks. The Fire 7 Kids doesn't have an IP rating, so it's unlikely to survive a swim in the pool. Day-to-day drops and bumps shouldn't be an issue so long as you keep it in the protective case. In testing, I dropped the tablet several times on both hard and soft surfaces and it easily shrugged off each impact. The fold-out kickstand also serves as a handle, which is a useful design touch. The tablet sits reasonably deep inside the case, so if your child drops it the screen won't make contact with the ground and should be protected. Furthermore, it's much easier for small hands to grip. ![]() The hefty foam shell is sturdier than most basic tablet cases and can handle some pretty serious drops. One of the main selling points of the Fire 7 Kids Tablet is the rugged case that comes with it. Though Amazon's app ecosystem is smaller than the competing Apple App Store and Google Play, the selection can be viewed as an advantage for parents because kids are less likely to encounter unsafe or inappropriate material. To that end, plenty of entertaining apps, books, and videos are available via the Amazon Appstore, so kids should easily be able to find plenty to occupy their time (we'll discuss this in greater detail in a bit). In our battery drain test (streaming a YouTube video continuously over Wi-Fi), the Fire 7 Tablet lasted an impressive nine hours and 30 minutes, two and a half hours longer than the previous model.Īnd as far as any hardware drawbacks are concerned, kids aren't likely to care too much as long as they can access fun games and apps. On the plus side, battery life is now much better. The lackluster 2MP front and rear cameras aren't impressive, either, but they're fine for video calls. The tablet's 1,024-by-600-pixel screen remains unimpressive and can be difficult to see in bright light. Amazon says the new model offers a 30% speed improvement over the 2019 version, and although we did notice an improvement in our tests, it's still a bit sluggish compared with many other models. To summarize, you get the same relatively slow 2GHz MediaTek MT8168 chip with 2GB of RAM and either 16GB ($109.99) or 32GB ($129.99) of storage. That means everything we observed in our review of the standard Fire 7 applies here. ![]() Despite this tablet's child-friendly features and child-like appearance, it's ultimately just a regular Fire 7 Tablet (available in blue, purple, or red) tucked into a durable cushy case. ![]() If you want a full example, here are the commands for the command blocks to teleport an ArmorStand by the name of "Bob" 5 blocks in the air 5 seconds after running the start delay command (step #4 above): /scoreboard players add time 1įeel free to comment on this post with any questions!
